This week the Jewish community in New Zealand made history, with its first cross-country mega challah bake. The Covid lockdown restrictions meant that Auckland’s annual Great Big Challah Bake that last year hosted over 100 women, was unable to go ahead.
Unfazed, the organisers immediately set to work arranging a virtual challah bake, Zoom – style. Its virtual element allowed women and girls from Wellington, ChCh, Hamilton, Tauranga, and more to tune in and bake challah in unity.
And was a huge success it was! As well as receiving a gift package containing the annual branded apron, participants enjoyed an evening of inspiration and unity. Keynote speaker Simone Kantor from Auckland left not a dry eye in the room with her moving story on battling cancer, and the power of prayer at a group challah bake that saved her life at a critical moment.
Sarah Adelman from Melbourne had us all singing and dancing in our kitchens with her beautiful song and guitar, with some amazing Jewish classics and Shabbat tunes.
Adi Malal from Hamilton brought her expert skills to the table, and shared her knowledge with a beautiful demo on challah braiding, with her three gorgeous daughters by her side.
This week, in honour of the Shabbos Project 2021, Jewish women and girls across New Zealand unite to come together for Shabbat, with the mitzvahs of baking challah and lighting Shabbat candles. In honour of these mitzvahs may all our prayers be accepted and answered on high!
Have a wonderful Shabbos
